The prevalence of schizophrenia in children and adolescents is low, about 1.4 in 10,000 before the age of 15. While adult-onset schizophrenia has been studied in detail, research on EOS is limited, partly due to its low prevalence and because EOS was not recognized in the diagnostic systems before the introduction of DSM-III in 1980. Early-onset schizophrenia (EOS), schizophrenia with onset before 18 years old, Very Early Onset Schizophrenia (VEOS), schizophrenia with onset before 13 years old, and psychotic symptoms in pediatric patients are rare and require further workup to exclude primary psychiatric and neurologic conditions, infectious processes, and toxic or metabolic causes.
